Lyme disease can be transmitted both in dogs and in humans. Ticks are actually the primary reason why Lyme disease occurs because the bacteria it carries will be transmitted to the dog or person that was bitten. Take note that ticks that don’t carry these bacteria will not transmit the condition. It is important for you to take precautions so that your pet and your family will be protected against Lyme disease, here are some tips:

Apply tick-killing products to animals – apply chemicals that kill ticks so that the disease will not spread. The product should contain pyrethrins and permethrins because these can kill ticks in cats, dogs, and horses. However, remember that some animals may be sensitive to these insecticides so follow instructions accordingly.

Treat your environment with insecticides – some product is specifically designed to kill ticks. You need to use these products on your immediate environment if you suspect that there are ticks on your home. Take precautions in spraying insecticides though to avoid contaminating water and food.

Remove attached ticks as soon as possible – if ticks attached itself to your pet, remove them immediately to reduce the chances of transmission. Use tweezers around the insect’s mouthparts where it is attached to the pet and pull outwards to remove the tick.
